Neuroscience-Music-Dementia-Connection: Music and Its Affect Upon the Elderly Brain with Focus on Patients with Dementia & Alzheimer's Disease
Grace Cloutier, B.M. The Juilliard School, M.M. Yale University, DMA ABD University of Arizona
Harpist + Recording Artist + Educator + Producer + Artistic Consultant
Why does music affect us so powerfully and in such a positive way? How is it that a patient suffering from Dementia (and the many branches within Dementia, including Alzheimer’s) is instantaneously transported back in time in terms of cognitive functioning by remembering in singing every lyric of their favorite songs, understanding the rhythm perfectly, while often creating physical gestures, movement, or even dance to express that comprehension? And yet, the fact remains that at the same time, they cannot remember what they said just 5 minutes prior, what they ate for breakfast that day, or the name of their child? Grace will explore this and more and, will also leave time for an open discussion to address any questions.
An active proponent for increased public awareness concerning the intrinsic value of music for all people at every stage of life, Grace Cloutier has received the Gluck Fellowship from The Juilliard School for her work with victims of AIDS, the elderly, and children. In addition, she has been honored with a Presidential Point of Light Award for her musical contributions to Hospice. She is currently pursuing her PhD with her thesis highlighting the neurological-music connection to patients with Dementia, focusing specifically on Alzheimer’s. Grace is also the primary caretaker of her beloved mother, who has Stage IV Alzheimer’s. Today and all of her research is dedicated to her mother: her forever teacher, and her best friend.
Additionally, Rhode Island’s Bridgemark Addiction Recovery Services professionals will be contributing and available for questions.
